WHY NATURAL DEODORANTS ARE BETTER FOR YOU

Today’s gift suggestion is not just a marketing piece (it is definitely tooting our own horn), but an honest reflection on the pluses and minuses of Natural vs. Non-Natural deodorants and antiperspirants.

For years, many of us have been using non-natural deodorants and antiperspirants, but only recently have organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and other consumer watch organizations brought to light the many harmful effects of the ingredients found in many non-natural and non-organic antiperspirants.

Why are they popular? We know now that we use them for 3 main reasons: 1) they are relatively cheaper than natural and organic products; 2) non-natural products are more readily available in retail stores; and 3) for some reason, we generally feel non-natural deodorants and antiperspirants are more effective because they have been on the market for decades, and most of us want and need that assurance that a deodorant is definitely going to keep us feeling fresh all day long. However, when we take a closer look at some of the problematic ingredients that non-natural deodorant and antiperspirants typically contain, we can begin to see why prolonged use of these products may lead to health risks to our bodies and our environment.

To start, it has been discovered that parabens are in 85% of commercially sold cosmetics simply because they are an inexpensive ingredient for companies to use in their products. Parabens (including butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben) are a type of preservative that are dangerous because their chemical composition mimics the shape of estrogen hormones in the body, and thus taking its place in the system. This specific kind of paraben is called Xenoestrogen and is linked to high risks of breast cancer and reproductive issues. These kinds of parabens have been discovered in malignant breast tumors, according to a study by Dr. Philippa Darbre in 2004.

The list of harmful ingredients in antiperspirants goes on and on. For example, Synthetic polymers which contain toxic impurities that are determined to be carcinogenic are highly prominent in the composition of many antiperspirants. Triclosan is an anti-fungal agent present in a myriad of products such as toothpaste, soap, detergents, and even children’s toys, which has been classified as a pesticide by the FDA. Aluminum is closely linked to the creation of breast cancer tumors and is categorized as a toxic heavy metal.  Triethanolamine (TEA) and Diethanolamine (DEA) are invasive chemicals present in deodorant that seep into the skin and later cause kidneys and the liver problems. Both TEA and DEA have been banned throughout the cosmetic industry in Europe because of their detrimental effects; but in the United States, cosmetic manufacturers continue to use them without regard of repercussions. These are only a few of the ingredients that are found in most of the deodorants and antiperspirants that the leading brands put on the shelves.  When used on your skin, synthetic antiperspirants clog pores and create a build-up of sweat and bacteria behind the blocked ducts, which can result in bumpy skin and inflammation.

Natural deodorants, however, do not contain the above harmful synthetic ingredients, and they will not clog your pores. Opting for a deodorant with natural ingredients also reduces the risk of immediate and future health issues that you may experience due to the accumulation of toxic chemicals within the body from synthetic commercial deodorants and antiperspirants.

E’s Secret Mist is an all-natural and organic deodorant that packs a powerful punch of nature’s most effective essences that keep you fresh for hours on end.  Unlike an antiperspirant, it doesn’t aim to block your sweating. Sweating is a natural and necessary part of our body’s ability to keep cool under physically and mentally stressful conditions, so we do not want to stop this important bodily function.  Instead, E’s Secret Mist will send completely natural oils and nature’s fragrances to nurture and feed your skin with natural anti-bacterial properties such as Lavender, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus oils to keep your body feeling fresh naturally.

Those who have made the switch to our all-natural deodorant have also reported several other side benefits and uses.  E’s Secret Mist also acts as 1) a natural deodorizing room freshener for those hard-to-cover odors like fish smells or cigarette smoke; 2) a facial atomizer to freshen your face during long trips; and 3) an effective insect repellant as well as an instant moisturizing and healing spray for instant relief from bug bites.

When you buy natural deodorants such as ours, you can be sure that they are sustainably mixed in small, precision-clean batches so you can be sure there are no harmful chemical preservatives or synthetic emulsifiers as there are in many commercial products that are made to sit on shelves for months and years on end.

Lastly, E’s Secret Mist was tested on people (our lovely and willing human testers and customers), and not on laboratory animals, so we know that it is cruelty-free and safe and effective for human consumption.
